Fayetteville, Arkansas — 25 August 2025 — The University of Arkansas was placed on high alert Monday afternoon after reports of an active shooter at Mullins Library, sending students and staff scrambling for safety.
At approximately 12:30 p.m. CDT, the university’s emergency system, RazALERT, issued a campus-wide message warning of a possible shooter inside the central library. The alert carried the stark instruction: “Avoid. Deny. Defend.”
Police response and campus lockdown
Campus police and the Fayetteville Police Department rushed to the scene, quickly surrounding the building and beginning a systematic sweep. Students inside the library were ordered to evacuate under police escort, while those elsewhere on campus were told to shelter in place.
Multiple bridges, walkways, and roads leading to the library were sealed off as officers worked to clear the area. Helicopters were seen circling overhead, underscoring the seriousness of the response.
No evidence of gunfire
By early afternoon, officials reported no evidence of gunfire or injuries. While officers continued their search, university spokespersons acknowledged the possibility that the incident may have been a false alarm, though investigations are still ongoing.
