The United States and China will resume high-level trade talks within the next two to three months, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Tuesday. The discussions aim to shape the future of economic relations between the world’s two largest economies.
The announcement came a day after the Trump administration extended a 90-day pause on planned tariff increases for Chinese imports, a move seen as an effort to keep negotiations on track.
Speaking on Fox Business Network’s Kudlow, Bessent stressed that any reduction in tariffs would depend on substantial progress in curbing the flow of fentanyl into the United States. “We will need to see months, if not quarters, if not a year, of improvement before considering lowering tariffs,” he said.
The upcoming talks are expected to cover trade imbalances, market access, and enforcement measures — key issues that have long fueled tensions between Washington and Beijing.
