House Speaker Mike Johnson is urging Republicans to keep their disagreements behind closed doors after a chaotic week marked by internal feuds, public criticism and legislative setbacks. Johnson told colleagues that while disagreements are part of governing, airing frustrations on social media or in the press only deepens divisions within an already fragile GOP majority.
The appeal follows a series of tense moments in the House, including public accusations from members of Johnson’s own party, failed attempts to advance GOP-backed legislation, and unusual procedural moves such as discharge petitions filed without leadership’s support. The disruptions have fueled concerns about party unity heading into an election cycle where control of the House is at stake.
Johnson said he welcomes criticism but insisted that members bring concerns directly to him instead of broadcasting them publicly. He emphasized that the party cannot afford internal battles while navigating a tight majority and facing pressure from both conservative hardliners and moderates.
Some Republicans, however, have openly questioned Johnson’s leadership approach, suggesting he must adapt to maintain authority within the caucus. Despite rising tensions, Johnson said he remains committed to keeping the conference focused on its legislative goals and avoiding further public turmoil.
The speaker’s message underscores the growing challenge of maintaining cohesion within the GOP — a task that has become increasingly difficult as ideological divisions continue to surface.
